Condition: Milia
Milia are tiny whitish, pearly papules (bumps) or keratin-filled cysts that develop
as a result of dead skin cells that become trapped and do not exfoliate normally.
Milia usually appear across the forehead, nose upper cheeks, or chin. This type
of cystic structure can also develop in the gums and soft palate (roof of the mouth)
of newborn infants.
Primary milia typically occurs in infants as a result of underdeveloped sebaceous glands, but may also occur in children and adults. Secondary milia can occur throughout adulthood, as a result of blistering or trauma due to disruption of the sweat ducts. Skin trauma from dermabrasion or from the application of topical steroids can also cause secondary milia as the rate of exfoliation of skin cells can be accelerated as a result of these treatments.
