Traditional Treatments Are Not Lifestyle Choices
Most common treatments for acne and blemishes would be very poor lifestyle choices because they involve subjecting your skin to harsh chemicals or mechanical peeling which can provide temporary success and long-term damage. In addition, they do not fit neatly into daily life which makes them more difficult to maintain over the long term.
Still, even if you only experience occasional breakouts of pimples, why would you want to use a product that can excessively dry your skin or upset its natural exfoliation and growth processes?
Dealing with acne and the bumps, redness, inflammation and scarring associated with acne, is very often an ongoing or recurring process. Why would you want to undergo a treatment that literally removes your skin, or that artificially enhances hormone levels throughout your system or that can put you on antibiotics or other medications with possible side-effects - if you don't have to?
Traditional treatments can create short-term success, but they are not lifestyle choices and can sometimes adversely affect your lifestyle and your long-term health.
Traditional Treatments for Acne and Breakouts
Broad-spectrum antibiotics. Broad-spectrum antibiotics have long been used for systemic treatment of moderate to severe acne. Tetracycline, erythromycin, and doxycycline are all oral antibiotics used to treat acne which require monitoring by a physician for systemic side-effects.
Long-term use of antibiotics can increase the risk of antibiotic resistance in skin bacteria. A side-effect of taking many antibiotics can be an increase in the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet light, which can cause increased free-radical activity and long-term damage of skin cells and cell DNA.
Hormonal therapies and corticosteroids. Hormonal therapies and corticosteroids may be prescribed for the treatment of severe acne, but these methods of treatment can induce side-effects with prolonged use.
Isotretinoin. Isotretinoin is a retinoid recognized as an effective drug for cystic acne and acne that is resistant to other medications. However, a number of serious side-effects are associated with isotretinoin therapy including the potential for birth defects. Thinning hair, joint and bone pain, depression, vomiting and nausea are some of the other less common side-effects.
Chemical peels. Chemical peels are used to remove the epidermis layers of the skin to improve acne scars. The percentage of acid used to peel the skin determines the depth of the skin layers removed.
Chemical peels (glycolic, salicylic acid and 15% TCA) do little to improve ice-pick or deep, depressed acne scars where the damage is in the dermis. Recovery from peels can be lifestyle-restricting and includes staying indoors away from sunlight as well as avoidance of other oxidizers and cigarette smoke.
After peeling, redness and flaking of the skin can occur for up to a week. Medium-depth and laser peels (carbon dioxide or erbium: YAG), strip deeper layers of the skin causing redness and severe flaking. Recovery following these procedures can take weeks or even months.
N-Lite® Laser. N-Lite laser is a relatively recent treatment for acne. Using yellow light energy to destroy bacteria, this treatment induces a chemical reaction by creating oxidation (producing free radicals) intended to kill bacteria.
Dermabrasion. Dermabrasion is a common treatment used for shallow, depressed scars but the recovery can take months. During recovery, the skin must be protected from oxidation and sunlight because the outer skin layers that protect the internal layers have been completely removed by this procedure.
Microdermabrasion is now even more popular than the deeper dermabrasion because it can be done in spas by non-medical professionals and because it does not remove as many layers of skin as regular dermabrasion. Still, this procedure does remove the surface layers of the skin and it should not be considered a lifestyle.
Collagen. Collagen is injected directly into acne scars to attempt to smooth the skin and effectively "remove" the scar. While there is no specific recovery time following this procedure, the results are not permanent and additional injections are required to maintain results.

I’m 27 and my sister is 19 and we have both suffered for years from acne. We both had very large, almost cystic acne that would leave scars and never, never went away and it covered most of our face. It has now been about 4 weeks and our skin is looking so wonderful. It’s like we’ve been given a miracle! To look at our skin today you can hardly tell that we’ve ever had a problem with acne!
